Comparative Study - Reuse Steel

It has been recognized that existing steel buildings are a huge reservoir of materials and component that can potentially be used for future projects. Reuse of structural steel is the most efficient use of resources, not requiring any additional energy for the recycling process. To quantify the effect of using reuse steel salvaged from old buildings, the carbon foot print for a 10 storey steel office building has been computed for three different reuse contents (10%, 30% and 50%). The building structural system consists of composite metal slab flooring supported on steel gravity frame with lateral resistance provided by chevron bracing. Examples of new buildings designed and constructed using salvaged structural steel and a protocol for identifying salvaged steel for reuse are featured in Steel Advisor article ENV 1002 (Fussell 2009).
